Never say Never!

Brett's not allergic to anything. Nothing bother's him. He never gets allergies, never gets sunburned, even bugs rarely bite him, and he is allergic to nothing. Or so we thought. So you can imagine our surprise one day when we went to eat at Rumbi Island and within an hour of eating there, Brett's eyes became itchy.

It was getting late and we had church early the next day so we were sure Brett was just sensitive to something and we moved on. A few hours later, his eyes really started to swell and got red spots all over them. This continued. Then his whole body started breaking out in hives! Brett ran to the store to get Benadryl. (Which he really shouldn't have because he didn't feel well and wasn't seeing straight.) His eyes continued to swell like gold balls. Even his ear started getting big! Ya know that movie, "Hitch?" Not an exaggeration! He was totally swelling up like Will Smith in that movie. Will Smith drank a bottle of Benadryl to make his reaction go away. By morning, we could tell Brett was going to need more then that.
This picture doesn't even do it justice of how bad Brett looked. By morning, he was having "indigestion." I called my sister, Aleesha to watch my kids, we obviously weren't going to church. Instead we took a trip to Instacare.

He wore his sunglasses and casually walked into the Instacare, hoping they could prescribe something a bit stronger then bendaryl. As we sat in the "consultation cubical", we payed for the visit and tried to explain what was happening. In the meantime, I could see Brett's wrists swelling up like a grapefruit. I finally told him he better just take off his glasses and SHOW her what was happening. (His eyes were almost swollen shut at this time cause they were so big!) The lady starred at Brett in shock for no longer then a 1/2 a second and politely said, "I think that's all we need." Before we could even sit down in the waiting room two nurses were calling Brett's name and rushing him back to a room, preparing needles, and yelling for the doctor. (A little bit of panic set in my stomach at this point.)
Brett's "indigestion" come  to find out, was his throat closing off and he wasn't breathing well!!! The Dr. came running in and they were poking him with an Epi pen and a bunch of other stuff to stop the swelling. Another little nurse walked in to ask the Dr. a question about another patient. Boy did that Dr. yell at the nurse! The other patient was NOT a priority... this man here was her priority! (Still... I was pretty concerned.) How on earth did we not come in sooner? We are so dumb! The Dr. wanted to know the same thing! She was really nice and so were the nurses. They took good care of him and got his hives, itching, and swelling under control. I'm so grateful to them.

I've called Rumbi and gotten an exact list of what was in Brett's rice bowl... nothing out of the ordinary. (He had eaten it before!) But maybe something in the restaurant was cooked in the same pan. Who knows. It's still a mystery to us! It hasn't happened since and I hope it won't happen again. Needless to say, Brett never will eat at Rumbi again. We learned Brett can't say, "he's never been allergic to anything..." cause that's obviously not the case! Glad he's okay. I'm not sure what we would do without our Bretty!!!

That is way scary! It's hard to know when to go to the dr or not. Glad he's okay and that you went in when you did.
